It’s not a normal box. It’s a blue box.
Brand design / Art direction / Concept development
If you’re reading this, you already know the challenge in making device photography innovative. Especially in a world with AI. When anyone can create anything, we wanted to create something. Tangible. Constructed. Blue.
The Box is a creative solution to one of my team’s most tedious problems. We were constantly trying to find interesting ways to show our software, with short deadlines to produce new assets. Everything ended up feeling like stock images, and none of it felt human.
So we took a step back from our regular routine. We let go of any traditional boundaries, and let our imaginations run wild. You can take a look at that entire process further down, but the end result was a miniature, adjustable studio in our primary brand color.
Our product is showcased in a unique environment, either solely on a device or with human interaction. In static images or video content. Making The Box let us reconnect with both our creativity and the product itself, and gave our device photography a much needed refresh.
Or maybe we did it all just to make a thinking outside the box joke.

Bringing the box to life
Concept development. The process started by looking at anything but device photography. We knew we wanted to do something different so the context was more important than traditional device photography. We gathered references in categories, exploring different routes to find what felt right
Bringing the box to life. To test our concept we started with proof of concept paper models to test our sketches, present our idea internally and get buy-in from stakeholders.
We constructed a life size cardboard prototype to visualize the idea, get a better sense of scale with actual devices, and understand how light works in the space.
From there we worked with Storverkstan to translate our idea into a final design.
The box was designed and built with modularity in mind. The walls are interchangeable and detachable to give us as much creative flexibility as possible.
Scaling the box. We also developed a standard for grading to ensure consistency as we took more photos and turned each photo into mockups.
